Searles Valley Mining Town

About Trona, CA

Welcome to Trona, a high-desert mining community on the edge of Searles Lake, framed by the Trona Pinnacles and set on the road to Death Valley.

Trona sits in the high desert of San Bernardino County, on the western edge of Searles Lake, a dry lake bed in the Searles Valley southwest of Death Valley. It is an unincorporated community whose name comes from the mineral trona, and its history is bound up with the chemistry of the lake bed beneath it. Borax was discovered at Searles Lake by John W. Searles in the 1860s, and the famous 20-mule teams hauled the mineral across the desert to the coast. In the early 1900s, mining companies built plants at the site to recover soda ash, potash, borax, and sodium sulfate from the lake, and the town grew up around those operations. Mining remains the backbone of the local economy. Searles Valley Minerals, which produces borax and other industrial minerals, is the town's largest employer and has kept Trona a working company town in the modern era. The surrounding desert is stark and dramatic: the Trona Pinnacles, a cluster of tufa spires rising from the lake bed, were designated a National Natural Landmark and lie within the California Desert National Conservation Area. State Route 178 runs through the valley, linking Trona east toward Death Valley and west toward Ridgecrest, the nearest sizeable town and a regional employment and shopping center. Trona is remote by any measure. Services are limited, and residents often travel to Ridgecrest for shopping, medical care, and other needs, but that remoteness is part of the appeal for those drawn to the open desert, dark night skies, and the peculiar beauty of the Searles Valley landscape. Housing is modest and largely tied to the mining workforce, and the community's identity remains inseparable from the minerals beneath it. It is a small, close-knit place defined by mining, geology, and the vastness of the surrounding Mojave.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Trona, California known for?

Trona is known for the mineral trona, which gives the town its name, and for its long history of mineral mining at Searles Lake. It is also famous for the nearby Trona Pinnacles, a National Natural Landmark of tufa spires within the California Desert National Conservation Area, and for its setting on the edge of Death Valley.

What county is Trona in?

Trona is an unincorporated community in San Bernardino County, California. It sits at the western edge of the dry Searles Lake bed in the Searles Valley, southwest of Death Valley, and falls under the county's planning and service jurisdiction rather than any incorporated city government.

What is the nearest city to Trona?

Ridgecrest is the nearest sizeable city, located about twenty-five miles to the west along State Route 178. Ridgecrest provides the shopping, medical care, and other everyday services that Trona's small population relies on, since the town itself has limited commercial options.

City Guide

About Trona

Real Estate & Housing

Housing in Trona is modest and shaped by its company-town history. Most of the housing stock consists of single-family homes and small residential lots built to serve generations of mining workers, with a compact street grid around the center of town. The area is a no-frills high-desert setting, and residential life is closely tied to employment at the Searles Valley Minerals operations. Because Trona is unincorporated, it falls under San Bernardino County's planning and service jurisdiction rather than a municipal government.

Neighborhoods

Trona is part of the broader Searles Valley area, which also includes the small nearby communities of Argus and Pioneer Point. Within Trona itself, the town is compact and centered on the mining operations and the main road through the valley. These communities together form the Searles Valley census-designated place, sharing the same remote desert setting, school district, and San Bernardino County services.

Lifestyle in Trona

Life in Trona is quiet, remote, and tied to the rhythms of the mining plant. With limited commercial services in town, residents regularly make the roughly 25-mile drive to Ridgecrest for shopping and amenities. The draw is the desert itself: wide-open views, dark night skies, and proximity to the Trona Pinnacles and Death Valley. Community life centers on the school, local organizations, and the shared identity of a small high-desert town.

Schools & Education

Trona is served by the Trona Joint Unified School District, a small district operating just two schools for students from the Searles Valley area. The district is one of the smallest in California, and its size reflects the community's remote, sparsely populated setting. Families in Trona and the surrounding communities rely on the district for both elementary and secondary education.

Getting Around

State Route 178 is Trona's main artery, running through the Searles Valley and connecting the community east toward Death Valley and west toward Ridgecrest, where it meets U.S. Route 395. The town is roughly 25 miles from Ridgecrest, the nearest full-service city, and considerably farther from larger population centers. With no rail or commercial air service locally, travel is entirely road-based, and most regional trips route through Ridgecrest or along CA 178.

Parks & Recreation

Trona's standout recreation feature is the Trona Pinnacles, a National Natural Landmark of tufa spires within the California Desert National Conservation Area that draws photographers, hikers, and off-road enthusiasts. The surrounding Searles Valley and the nearby Death Valley region offer vast open desert for exploring, stargazing, and four-wheel-drive routes. The pinnacles are reached from CA 178, and the area's dark skies and stark geology make it a destination for landscape photography and geology enthusiasts.
